OTHELLO
(The summary)



Major characters :
Othello, General of the Venetian army.
Desdemona, Othello's wife, Brabantio's daughter.

Minor characters :
Iago, Othello's ensign.
Emilia, Iago's wife, Desdemona's waiting gentlewoman.
Brabantio, Desdemona's father, a Senator of Venice.
Roderigo, a sucker.
Cassio, Othello's lieutenant.
Lodovico, a Venetian noble.
Montano, Governor of Cyprus before Othello.


Iago hates Othello, because he has given Cassio a promotion which he has expected to be his before. At the same time, Roderigo falls in love with Desdemona. He is  disappointed, as Desdemona has been Othello’s wife. The  two men then develope a conspiracy to put away Othello.
At any occasions, Iago tries to drop Othello into a harmful dan difficult condition. Once, he tries to raise a conflict between Othello and his father in law, Brabantio who is a Senator of Venice. He tries to provoke a brawl, but Othello manages to control the situation.

The next time, Iago tries to raise Othello's suspicions towards his wife Desdemona. He tries to make Othello believe that his wife is not faithful to him. She has a special relationship with Cassio. Iago contrives to get  Cassio drunk, so that Othello has to dismiss him from his post. Then, he advises Cassio to ask Desdemona to use her influence with her husband to give his work back.
After that Iago persuades Othello that if he hides himself, he will see Desdemona talk to Casio.

Iago arranges it in such away, so  while Cassio is talking to Desdemona, Othello comes. Iago succeeds in making Othello believe that his wife has an affair with Casio. Iago continues fanning  the fires. He says that he has ever seen Cassio with Desdemona’s handkerchief. As Desdemona can not show him her handkerchief (which has been in fact taken by Iago’s wife,  Emilia), Othello thinks  that  Iago’s story is completely right. Othello leaves Desdemona angrily and decides that both Cassio and Desdemona must be killed.

At the climax of the play, Roderigo attacks Cassio, but he wounds him. Iago wounds Cassio from behind and then runs away. Thinking that Cassio is dead, Othello goes to kill Desdemona. He smuthers and finishes her. Suddenly, Emilia comes dan reveals Iago’s conspiracy. Then, Lodovico enters, followed by Montano, Cassio, and Iago, who has been captured. They give more proof of Iago’s guilt. However, Othello will be returned to Venice for trial. As they are about to go, Othello asks for a chance to say "a word or two." He speaks of how he wants to be remembered, then stabs himself, kisses Desdemona, and dies.
